Sorry, I have resolved the problem, it all stems from the plugin "Adminimize". I added an additional role and that role hides the menu item.

I have the free and the premium versions activated. The only other thing I did before this problem occurred was that a message kept showing in the plugin area telling me to install the premium version or cancel the license, I clicked on the"cancel license" hoping it would then allow me to clear...

also because I don't have a woody snippet menu item I can't add the activation key

I updated to the latest copy and now I have lost the Woody snippet menu item, I have tried re-installing the plugins but still not visible.
